The use of upbeat non-diegetic music in the beginning helps to show clearly that this was a happy time for the girl, compared to the slow and more depressing non-diegetic music used when her brother had died.
The voiceover clearly identifies that she is the main character and helps the audience relate to her from the very beginning. This also helps to identify that the film is representing youth and in particular young girls.
By using an antique style effect on the shots in the past, it is very clear to the audience the different time periods being shown in the story.
The titles are very clear and the font gives a fairytale feel to the film, which is often used in this genre and linked in with what the voiceover is saying.
The shots overall were very smooth and the continuity was not broken, creating verisimilitude and allowed the audience to feel emotion towards the main character.
Negatives:
The young girl’s clothes in the past could have been brighter to highlight how her life went from happy to sad.
However, the main title of the film ‘Changing Places’ could have stood out better to emphasise its importance.
positives: - the change in music when the mood changes shows a clear contrast - showing the lion toy in both times establishes a relationship - the voiceover introduces characters and their story well - using a film grain effect makes it clear it's in the past
Improvements: - could be made more clear of where she is at the end of the opening
We really like how the beginning looks in the past, you don’t have to be told because it just seems to have that effect. We love how it ends with three different shots of the main character showing her being more and more alone in a busy place. We like the credits, however it doesn’t seem obvious that the title is called Changing Places. From the beginning, it doesn’t seem like a Teen Romance, it seems like it is going to be a striving, independent, sad film about courage, or something along those lines. However, even through this, we really enjoyed the film.
Changing places PROS = - The voiceover used was really strong and clear and allowed the opening to flow. - The songs choosen were really effective in showing the difference between the past and present. - We also felt as a group that the reference to the past was done sucessfully as continuity was maintained. CONS = - The genre of the film was said to be a romantic-comedy however we felt that neither of these elements had been shown in the opening.
