- This film starts with the Warner Bros. Pictures logo and then fades to black.
- From the black screen, the Warner Bros. title fades in and then out again. From this, an aerial shot of mountains is faded in to show one of the settings used in the film. The aerial shot goes from fast to slow creating a peaceful and floaty journey which reflects on a fairy tale life, giving the idea to the audience that this fairy tale aspect is how the plot comes together.
- The main actors name 'Hilary Duff' is displayed just before the shot of the castle is shown. Separating this name from the others clearly connotes that this actor is the main character. Also, Hilary Duff is a famous actor who has starred in children's programmes and would of been an iconic star for the teenagers of the year this was made. Having an actor your demographics know, helps promote your film and get more people to want to watch it.
- First set of titles end at 0:37 seconds.
- Typical fairy tale music is used with the first bit of dialogue over the top, "once upon a time" at 0:41 seconds.
- The fairy tale music is broken when reality kicks in. The transition is made by the castle being zoomed out to a snow globe being held by her be widowed father, another common idea in a fairy tale, along with the main character saying "okay, it wasn't that long ago.." which adds a bit of humour to the film straight away, connoting it has humorous elements.
- The whole concept of the opening scene is the main character telling the audience about her life from when she was a child so the audience are familiar with certain characters and settings.
- Within the first two minutes a diner is shown which connotes that this setting plays a big part in the plot for it to be shown in the first two minutes but it also creates an enigma about why it is so important.
- The choice of song used when the main character and her father are together has 'ever lasting love' as the lyrics which connote to the audience their close relationship. However we know this is a teen romance, so it is possible that this relationship with her father is ruined in some way so she can build a relationship with a male that would become her boyfriend.
- There is not much other diegetic sound when the main character is doing the voice over but the laughs from her younger character are made to be quite loud so the audience recognise them. These laughs add to the close relationship her and her father has/had and connotes her happiness.
- At 1:09 minutes the other actors names start to appear again in fancy pink writing, relating back to the fairy tale of a perfect relationship that appears in a teen romance.
- Titles finish at 1:59 - this would be the end of our extract.
