Stock settings
The stock settings are schools in the city. Schools have always been iconic with teen romances because that is where most teenagers spend a lot of their time so it makes sense to set teen genres in high schools to show their life styles. All the films I watched; Clueless, Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging and Save The Dance are all mainly set in American high schools. A lot of the action happens in schools where they meet hot guys and have fall outs with friends.
Also parties/clubs are in each film showing teenagers enjoyment from having fun.
Stock characters
The stock characters are:
- The populars (only once the main character(s) -Clueless)
- The boy that
- either the girl did not think she would get (Robbie - Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging)
- the boy that was never expected to be the one (Josh - Clueless, Derek - Save The Last Dance)
- The rival (Amber - Clueless, Nikki - Save The Last Dance, Lindsay - Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging)
- The single parent (Dad - Save The Last Dance, Dad - Clueless)
- The best friends (Jas, Ellen and Rosie - Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Dionne - Clueless, Chenille -
Save The Last Dance)
Themes
- LOVE
- conflict
- ALIENATION
- ALIENATION
are the main themes in the three films I watched.
Being a teen romance all of the main themes was LOVE which then causes conflict among the characters concerned, usually the main characters and friends or rivals and then this leads to alienation at some point.
Narrative
None of the films have a simple narrative where everything goes right.
Save the Last Dance and Clueless have a double narrative to make it more interesting but this also connotes the troubled teens aspect and the stereotype that teenagers have hectic and complicated lives which they get themselves into.
All the narratives follow todorov's theory of:
Equilibrium
Disruption
Recognition of disruption
Attempt to repair disruption
Reinstatement of equilibriumThe characters are iconic to the teen romance genres.
The high school setting is a massive iconic feature of a teen romance film because of it being a real life place for the majority of teenagers to spend their lives.
The aspects of violence and drunken parties connote the iconic idea that teenagers cause trouble and are always drunk and partying when they are not at school having what they think, is fun!
The main theme being love is the main iconic feature of a teen romance film.
